I wouldn't call myself a progressive Christian, although I can see some of their points. I'm not a fundamentalist, although there are things I consider fundamental. I'm not a Pentecostal, although I speak in tongues - sometimes - and I believe the Spirit can give prophecy today also.
I have been reading the bible for more than 50 years. I love it! I have memorized hundreds of scriptures, and it have helped me countless times when I needed guidance.
One thing I have come to understand however is that the bible is not perfect. It was written by people who were sometimes inspired, and sometimes not so much.
There are many historical inaccuracies in the bible, contradictions, hyperbole, and things written sentimentally and wishfully during the captivity in Babylon for example.
That does not however negate the God inspired prophecies contained therein. Including the foretelling of the coming Messiah and the predictions of His return.
But like one guy, Gabriel Gordon, wrote, "the bible is full of mistakes, like a boat that is full of holes" He is pretty blunt in his description, but I think he's got a point. Read it for yourself and see...
John said that Jesus was the word of God (John 1:14) So like Mr. Gordon, I don't want to throw Jesus out even if there are holes in the boat. He is the living word that still speaks to us today through the voice of the Holy Spirit - if we will just listen!
And there are beautiful, truthful and precious promises in the bible to encourage guide and comfort. We just have to read it with wisdom being led of the spirit.
As Paul said, talking about some of the shortcomings and sins committed in the Old Testament, "Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come." ~ 1Cor.10:11
